Local newspaper entries indicate that by 17th October 1914 Private J. G. Bingham had been promoted to the rank of Paid Lance Corporal at the time it was indicated that he was serving in D Company. 

Information taken from a local  newspaper dated the 9/10/1914 = The following promotions in "D" company, Hunts. Cyclist Corps have been announced : Corporals Cooper (Eynesbury), Davis, Forscutt and Watson ( St. Neots), to be Sergeants ; Pte. A. E. Basson (St. Neots), to be Corporal ; privates J. Bingham (Eynesbury), and E. Jackson (St. Neots), to be Lance-Corporals.
