His name appears on a list of appointments and promotions that appears in local papers on 9/4/1915. He was appointed acting Sergeant, from the rank of Corporal, in H company of the 2/1st Battalion.

Sergt. W. Colbert 290208 A company - Under Battalion orders 293, issued by Lieut. Col. J. L. Barkley V. D., officer commanding 2/1st Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalion issued at Vine cottage, Chapel St. Leonards, Alford, Lincs. on 11th December 1916 at 6:00 p.m., and signed by W. J. Satchell (Captain and Adjutant), orders being for the following day i.e. 12 December 1916, records indicate that he was granted leave of absence from 12-2-1917 to 16-12-1917 inclusive. W Colbert -
