Cecil James West Miles ]or W J C Miles]
| . |
Cecil James West Miles was born in about 1895, little is known of his early life, but he is next found enlisting in the 2/1st [Reserve] Battalion of the Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalion on the 21st November 1914. He enlisted at the Battalion H. Q. in St. Mary's Street, Huntingdon and gave his address as the Avenue, Godmanchester Huntingdonshire. He was allocate the HCB number of 692. Records also indicate that he served with the 1/1st HCB at some time. |

Records indicate
that he was one of a
large number of men from the Reserve Bat. who volunteered for active
service. They marched through Huntingdon behind their band on the
Saturday (before 23 December 1914), and departed from the station in
additional coaches that were attached to the 10.06 train. No destination
was given for the train or the men of the Reserve Battalion - it
was most certainly on the East coast of Yorkshire or Lincolnshire. The
report was in the Huntingdonshire Post dated 23 Dec. 1914. At some date in the future he went to France - possibly in July 1916 when he was posted to the 1/8 Royal Warwickshire Regiment (T.F) with the Regimental number of 307678. No trace can be found of where he died - although he is names on the war memorial at Godmanchester as serving in the Royal Garrison Artillery. More research is needed to ensure that the data here is correct as there is no prime evidence linking the two sources of information on the Regiments in which they served. His medal index card only indicates he served in the HCB and the Royal Warwickshire Regiment - his RW number would confirm that as it falls in a block of other HCB men that served in the R W.
